When was your company founded?
In 1972.
What makes your company different from the competition?
We exist to serve the athlete. We listen to the athlete’s dreams and desires, and then we innovate relentlessly to help bring those dreams to life.
Define your vision
Nike’s mission is to bring innovation and inspiration to every athlete* in the world. (*If you have a body, you are an athlete.)
What is your greatest challenge?
We our constantly challenged by our athletes of all ages and levels, because they are challenging themselves to be better every single day.
How did your career started?
I worked for many years in advertising, but the thing I am most passionate about is sport, so I did advertising for Nike before joining the company full time.
Who or what inspires you?
I believe that sport is a unique place in our lives where we get to see the human spirit in action. I am inspired whenever someone seeks themselves through sport…on the pitch, in the pool, on the court, wherever.
In terms of technological innovation, what do you feel has change in your industry?
Nike has been very successful in looking at what athletes want to accomplish, and then looking for technological solutions that will help the athlete get there. Nike+ is a great example of this, wrapping a runner’s desire to run with music, track their progress, and challenge other runners into a singular technological solution. We are also revolutionizing football with Football+, a digital platform designed to bring the knowledge of professional players and coaches to our young footballer to help them get better.
How do you motivate your staff?
My philosophy is that we are in an important business. We create meaningful moments in the lives of our athletes…whether it’s an inspirational message, a product that helps them perform, or a new way of experiencing their sport, we are here to create meaningful moments, and not everyone gets to do that.
What is your passion, favorite sport or entertainment?
My passion is my family, but my favorite sport is football. I grew up in the first generation of kids to play football in the United States, and i have always felt since then that I am part of the global family who loves the beautiful game.
What do you think is essential to succed in your business?
The belief that everything is better when you work together than if you work alone.
Does your company have any social responsability project?
We have a group within the company called Sustainable Business and Innovation that is focused on company-wide efforts to act in the most socially responsible manner possible. In addition, we have been challenged across the company to integrate socially responsible thinking into all of our efforts. Our partnership with Project (RED) and Football leading up to the World Cup is perfect example of this.
What has been your greatest achievement or satisfaction?
Watching my 41/2 year old son learning to play football in Mexico ranks high, but marrying my wife is still the best decision I’ve ever made.
How do you ensure product quality?
It is an obsession at Nike. We are relentless in our innovation, design, testing, re-testing, and quality standards. We simply can’t rest until our athletes have the best product we can produce.
Do you have a national or international recognition, reward or distinctive?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked on a number of award-winning advertising campaigns during my career, but it pales in comparison to working in the arena of sports every day.
What kind of customer are you looking for?
We’re looking for people as passionate about sport, and the business of sport, as we are. I recently just hired a new advertising agency based on a single idea, one that showed that their passion for football was equal to ours.
What do you think that Mexico needs to move forward?
Right now, Mexico has its biggest young generation ever in its history. 45 percent of the population is under 30. They are internationally aware, but they love Mexico. Fantastic. We need to feed the hopes and dreams of this generation.
What value would you consider admirable in men?
Honesty and transparency. Most people are afraid to share bad news, but when you trust someone to give you the good and the bad, the world opens up for you. Sometimes it’s hard, but it works.
Do you have a personal anecdote that defines who you are today?
When my wife gave birth, she and the doctor had to remind me to check whether we had a boy or girl. In that moment, it really didn’t matter to me. Sometimes we get distracted by the details, and we miss the real story.
What message would you like to share with our readers?
Look inside yourself. Decide what you really want. Then do it.
